TOBY MARKS (BANCO DE GAIA)

Toby Marks was one of the primary forces behind the emergence of Britain's now legendary 'MegaDog' dance music scene. But his unique blend of ethnic textures and rhythms, and his fascination with, and attention to, sound design and instrumentation set him apart, both then and now. Long after most of his compatriots have departed, Toby continues to construct critically acclaimed, elaborate and soaring works that have sustained his legions of fans around the world, and found their way into several motion pictures, including Darren Aronovsky's 'PI'.

The sampler was compiled from the albums LAST TRAIN TO LHASA, BIG MEN CRY, YOU ARE HERE, THE MAGICAL SOUNDS OF BANCO DE GAIA, FAREWELL FERENGISTAN and his live DVD 'TWO THOUSAND AND 4.'

MANUEL GOTTSCHING (ASHRA)

Manuel Gottsching is a legend, pure and simple. Graduate of the infamous 'Berlin School' of experimental and electronic music, which also produced Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, his first band ASH RA TEMPEL blazed the trail that Can and Faust later trod. As a solo artist he produced four exceptional albums for Virgin Records 'golden' period of the mid to late 1970's. In 1981 he recorded E2-E4, a 60 minute continuous improvisation that pre-dated the techno scene by almost a decade and would go on to form the backing track of Sueno Latino's million selling club hit. The overall influence Manuel has had on contemporary music is incalculable. He continues to write, tour and record prolifically, with over 25 albums to his name, and plays his beloved Fender Stratocaster with a skill that is the envy of most established musicians.

The sampler was compiled from the albums LIVE IN JAPAN, E2-E4, THE PRIVATE TAPES, BELLE ALLIANCE and WALKIN' THE DESERT.

DAVID THRUSSELL (SOMA / SNOG / BLACK LUNG)

As one half of Australian electro-pagan outfit SOMA, David Thrussell produced one of the seminal albums of the 1990's - HOLLOW EARTH, a winner of Wire magazine's Album of the Year, whose influence still resonates to this day. Though a tough act to follow, he and partner Pieter Bourke pulled it off with THE INNER CINEMA, an intense, brooding and vastly under-rated work. Its cinematic edginess caught the attention of many Australian producers and David has since divided his time between recording and touring with his electronic punk outfit, SNOG, releasing works in his solo incarnation BLACK LUNG, and composing award winning soundtracks, most notably Scott Roberts' THE HARD WORD.

The sampler was compiled from SOMA's HOLLOW EARTH, THE INNER CINEMA and the STYGIAN VISTAS e.p. and David's soundtrack for THE HARD WORD.

We wish Darrell all the very best for the future.

DARRELL FITTON (BOLA)

Darrell Fitton is that rarity amongst the electronica scene - a genuine composer. Held in highest esteem by his contemporaries, the breadth and depth of his work could just as easily be orchestrated for acoustic performance. Darrell chooses, however, to focus on his extraordinary synthetic landscapes, producing eerie, ethereal and utterly beautiful tones. Occupying the shadows just behind the Warp Records stable of artists, his works are sporadic yet totally compelling. He simply sounds like no-one else.

The sampler was compiled from the albums SOUP, FYUTI, GNAYSE and the MAUVER e.p. Darrell also produces works under the name JELLO with one album, VOILE, released to date. Rarely photographed, Darrell also does not have much web presence. A fan page is the best resource for those perplexed by Skam Records' notoriously odd web site.
